Boeing's Phantom Eye unmanned airborne system will be able to stay aloft at 65000 feet for up to four days. Boeing also is developing a larger unmanned plane that will stay aloft for more than 10 days and 'Phantom Ray,' a fighter-sized UAV that will be a test bed for more advanced technologies. 'Phantom Eye is the first of its kind and could open up a whole new market in collecting data and communications,' Darryl Davis, president of Boeing Phantom Works, said today at the unveiling ceremony in St. Louis. 'It is a perfect example of turning an idea into a reality. It defines our rapid prototyping efforts and will demonstrate the art-of-the-possible when it comes to persistent intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. 'The capabilities inherent in Phantom Eye's design will offer game-changing opportunities for our military, civil and commercial customers.' Later this summer, Phantom Eye will be shipped to NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, California to begin a series of ground and taxi tests in preparation for its first flight in early 2011. Unmanned Aircraft Maps Alaskan Forest Wildfires

Staff from Poker Flat Research Range have traveled north to assist fire personnel in mapping the Crazy Mountain Complex fires with unmanned aircraft. The team is stationed at Mile 145 of the Steese Highway, between Circle and Central. They have been deploying the aircraft since Aug. 5. The mapping operation is using 40-pound Insitu ScanEagles equipped with infrared cameras. The aircraft have collected data that has allowed fire personnel to track the progression of fires and current hot spots. This work has proven difficult with manned aircraft. Dense and widespread smoke has grounded or severely limited logistical support from the air in recent days. With the infrared sensors aboard our unmanned aircraft, theyre identifying where the edge of the fire is, said Ro Bailey, special projects manager at Poker Flat Research Range. Anything the aircrafts get will be used to improve the accuracy of the current fire maps. The infrared cameras are performing exceptionally well. The equipment has the ability to peer through dense smoke as the unmanned aircraft fly above active fires. A ground-based pilot controls the aircraft during its flight. Unmanned Motorcycle

This unmanned motorcycle is my MSc. thesis project, done in the Technion, Israel, at the agricultural engineering department. Equations of motion for the motorcycle were derived using Newton equations, and were found to be in complete agreement with existing literature. The control scheme is a cascaded design, synthesized using Horowitz's QFT method. The robust controller allows for a stable unmanned ride of the motorcycle and disturbance rejection over a velocity range. The human operator remotely commands throttle action, brakes and gives a reference heading direction. The motorcycle mechanics, electronics and actuating servo modules are all self constructed, under a budget limit of 4000$. |
